Following persons can be sponsored by a Canadian citizen or a permanent residence living in Québec: 1) Spouse; de facto spouse or conjugal partner (over 16 years of age); 2) dependent child; 3) father, mother, grandfather, or grandmother; 4) orphaned brother, sister, nephew, niece, grandson, or granddaughter under 18 years of age, 5) and a child for adoption.
Process:
1st step: Send a sponsorship application to the IRCC for eligibility assessment, 2nd step: after receiving the approval you will be invited to continue the sponsorship process by submitting an undertaking application to Québec immigration (Ministère de l’Immigration, de la Francisation et de l’Intégration – MIFI), 3rd Step: Ask the person you are sponsoring to complete the application forms.
Prerequisites for Sponsorship
Previous commitments | You must not be in default of previous immigration/sponsorship/financial assistance commitments. |
Criminality | No conviction of sexual offence or threat of the sexual offences against family members or others. |
Financial capacity | If you sponsor relatives other than your wife and children, you need to prove your financial capacity for the duration of the sponsorship. |
Current Status | You must be a PR or a citizen, at least 18 years old and not subject to a removal order. |
Age Restrictions | You cannot sponsor a spouse/de facto spouse/conjugal partner if they are under 16 years of age. They must be of legal age to be eligible to sign the undertakings. |
Length of undertaking | You must enter into an undertaking agreement for the following duration depending on each category of sponsorship. 1) duration of undertaking for spouse/partner: 3 years, 2) duration of undertaking for children under 16 years: 10 years or more (or until they turn 18, whichever is longer), 3) undertaking for children of 16 years or more: minimum of 3 years (or until the age of 25 whichever is longer), 4) duration of undertaking for other relatives: 10 years. |
Sponsor’s Responsibilities | Taking care of the sponsored persons so they do not become a financial burden on the host society. You will be asked to reimburse any amount they get from the government in social aid during the undertaking period. |
Sponsored persons responsibilities | Keep the sponsored informed of all needs and changes, and especially if you need to approach the government for financial assistance. |
